Product Description
The FT-B is a forming tap / roll tap made of cobalt high-speed steel (HSS-E) — forms threads by cold extrusion without chips, giving stronger threads. It comes in 19 sizes (16 metric and 3 UNC/UNF) (thread dia 1.2~12/#6~#10, pitch 0.25~1.75, overall length 32~82mm, shank dia 3~8.5mm). Supplied uncoated (bright finish). It handles carbon and alloy steel, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals such as aluminium and copper, with workpiece hardness up to HRC40. Typical applications: blind-hole tapping in ductile materials such as steel, stainless steel, aluminium and copper; forming leaves no chips, which suits electronic parts, automotive parts and thin sheet where chips must not remain. In the same H.T.D family: the P type forming tap FT-P (the same 19 sizes as this series); the P type has a longer lead for through holes, the B type a short lead for blind holes. Can it tap cast iron? Not recommended: cast iron lacks the ductility to be formed; this tap is for steel, stainless steel and non-ferrous metals such as aluminium and copper. What drill size do I need? A forming tap needs a larger pilot hole than a cutting tap, so use a forming-tap drill chart rather than the usual tap drill size.
