Product Description
The WJ HSS Hand Tap W HT is the traditional straight flute tap - straight grooves, usable by hand or machine, and the tool most people simply call a hand tap. Chip handling is what separates it from spiral flute and spiral point taps: straight grooves push chips in neither direction, so they stay in the flute and you break them by reversing and working in stages. In exchange you get a stronger cutting portion, a lower price, and a tap that works in both through and blind holes - and is the best choice for hand work; for a three-piece set choose the three-piece hand tap set HT; for machine tapping of blind holes use the standard spiral flute tap SFT; for machine tapping of through holes use the standard spiral point tap POT; when the tap cannot reach, choose the long shank straight flute tap LHT. Substrate HSS, uncoated, rated to HRC30. It cuts British Whitworth (W) threads, in sizes covering nominal size 1/8~1-1/2, 17 variants. Made in Taiwan. Why use a straight flute tap by hand? Hand tapping is slow and torque is judged by feel, and the strong straight-flute cutting portion is the least likely to snap. Is one tap enough? A single tap is usually the second (plug) tap; to reach the bottom of a blind hole or start from bare stock, work through a three-piece set - taper, plug and bottoming. Typical applications: hand tapping and thread chasing, threaded holes in maintenance work, and general tapping of both through and blind holes.
