Diameter band and substrate are the difference: the general long drill LSD also starts at 1mm but uses plain HSS, while LSTD uses cobalt HSS-CO rated to HRC40, improving the two things that kill small deep drills - breakage and work hardening. Above 3mm use LSD or the cobalt deep-hole SSDC; for shallow holes STD is enough. Substrate HSS-CO, uncoated. Sizes cover diameter 1~3mm, flute length 30~75mm and overall length 75~150mm, in 65 variants. Made in Taiwan. Where do small deep drills break? Usually from trapped chips and walking, so spot the hole first (CD or NCSD), keep feed low and peck in short strokes. What can it cut? Carbon and alloy steel, stainless steel, and aluminium, copper and other non-ferrous metals. Typical applications: fine deep holes in precision parts, electronics and medical components, and small holes in jigs.
