Straight-shank drills have a cylindrical shank held in a drill chuck or ER collet—the most common type, for general drilling. The straight shank mounts easily on drill presses, mills, machining centers and hand tools, mostly in small-to-mid diameters. Carbide and HSS, with coatings for life. Select by diameter, depth and material, and watch clamping length and runout; for larger diameters or high torque, use taper-shank or side-lock holding.
