Product Description
The WJ HSS-CO Thin Plate Drill TPD is a short-flute drill made for sheet material: flute length fixed at 16mm, shank 6~8mm, held by an end-mill style shank rather than a plain jobber shank. Thin material is the difference. When an ordinary twist drill breaks through sheet, only part of the lip stays engaged, so it snatches, drills a triangular hole, or lifts the sheet off the table; the short flute and geometry here exist to avoid exactly that. A TiN-coated version of this product is also offered for longer life in continuous high-tensile plate work; for thick stock and ordinary hole depths use the SD or cobalt STD jobber drills. Substrate HSS-CO, offered uncoated or TiN-coated, rated to HRC40. Sizes cover diameter 6~10mm, flute length 16mm, overall length 44~80mm and shank 6~8mm, in 5 variants. Made in Taiwan. Why do thin sheets end up with triangular holes? Once the point breaks through, the drill loses its guide and the lips load unevenly, chattering out a lobed hole - short rigid flutes and a dedicated geometry suppress it. Can it drill stainless? Yes - the listed materials include carbon and alloy steel, stainless steel, and aluminium, copper and other non-ferrous metals. Typical applications: openings in sheet metal and thin steel plate, high-tensile plate work, and drilling thin automotive and enclosure parts.
