Spotting/center drills locate and guide before drilling, making a shallow conical spot so the following drill won't wander—improving hole-position accuracy; they also make lathe center (tailstock) holes. Short and rigid, with common points of 90°/120° (spotting) or 60° (center holes). Mainly HSS and carbide. Choose the angle and size to match the following drill's point and diameter; spotting first markedly reduces wander and breakage.
