A jig or fixture is the device that locates a workpiece and clamps it to the machine tool. Jigs and fixtures differ by exactly one function — tool guiding — and they are classified on three axes: machining method, construction type, and source of clamping force. 1. What a Jig or Fixture Is: The Device That Holds the Part

Cutting applies a force to the workpiece, and the part must be held securely on the machine tool so that force can be absorbed and the cut completed. The device that locates and clamps the workpiece is called a jig or fixture (Jigs & Fixture).

It takes no part in the cut, yet it decides whether the cut stays stable.

2. Jig or Fixture: The Difference Is Tool Guiding

In the original definition the two differ by exactly one thing: whether tool guiding is included.

A fixture provides two functions, locating and clamping the workpiece. A jig provides those and adds a tool guiding function on top.

CNC machining fixtures can already dispense with tool guiding, so the fixture functions alone — locating plus clamping — are enough. That is why "fixture" gradually replaced "jig" as the general term in the CNC era.

3. Three Core Functions: Guiding, Locating, Clamping

A jig or fixture must at minimum be able to guide, locate and clamp the workpiece. Four further functions should be considered during design:

4. Axis 1: By Machining Method

Jigs and fixtures are classified on three independent axes, and one fixture is described by all three at once — for example, "a modular manual fixture for a milling machine".

The first axis is the machining method. Machining divides broadly into turning, milling, drilling, tapping, EDM, grinding and gear cutting; beyond machining, they are also used in assembly and inspection.

The three axes are independent: a general-purpose fixture can be manual or automated, and so can a dedicated one.

7. Reading a Fixture Drawing: Three Points and Four Colours

Fixture drawings use three fixed terms. A locating point is the point that determines where the part sits in the fixture. A clamping point is where clamping force is applied. A support point supports areas of the part where clamping points are insufficient, and it is a movable point. Machining drawings mark them by colour:

8. Where Locating Starts: Six Degrees of Freedom and Restraint Order

Motion of a body in three-dimensional space resolves into six degrees of freedom: linear motion along the X, Y and Z axes, and rotation about each of those axes. Counting positive and negative directions, it can also be expressed as twelve degrees of freedom.

Degrees of freedom must be restrained in sequence, and locating may not be applied in an arbitrary order; locating a square part also requires choosing the locating sequence and the locating faces together. How that sequence is judged, and which face comes first, is presented in the source only as concepts and diagrams, with no criteria or figures set out — so this article does not infer them.

9. This Line Is the Work Side, Not the Tool Side

Jigs and fixtures belong to workholding: vises, chucks, vacuum and hydraulic fixtures hold the part being cut. Tool holding is about how a holder grips the cutting tool, with different specifications, selection logic and suppliers.
